PerformANCE at Caird Hall with CCC, May 2014

About the song

We Can Fly was written in 2014 for a Children's Classic Concerts (CCC) project involving a group of children from Drumchapel in Glasgow. It is a song with an aspirational theme, which can also feature a percussion element. It was originally performed twice, in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and the Caird Hall, Dundee (see video below) for concerts entitled ‘Going for Gold’ - musical celebrations of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014. These performances featured the young musicians from Drumchapel alongside students from the Junior Department of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland as well as the National Youth Choir of Scotland and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

In October 2018, a new version of We Can Fly was performed twice, in Glasgow and in Edinburgh. This was the culmination of a collaborative project between CCC and Drake Music Scotland. It was a multi-media event combining a live symphony orchestra, a 200 piece choir, pre-recorded digital and acoustic performances on a big screen, and live performances on an array of digital instruments from some of our project participants. See below for a film of the combined Edinburgh and Glasgow events…

This piece of music can be sung by choirs, used in schools, community projects, and now in the time of this global pandemic, we will see how it works online and at home!

As the message of the song is a universal one, I have a vision of it being sung by children all around the world.

'All around the world
People far and near
Open up your hearts
And hear us loud and clear
No matter who you are or where you're from, it's clear
That this is a message for you all to hear

You can do anything, you just have to try
You know you can reach all the way up to the sky
'Cause there's no reason why we can't learn to fly tonight
And when it feels too hard keep aiming high
You don't have to fight it no you just have to try
And there's no reason why we can't learn to fly tonight
We Can Fly.....'
